This article has some really good info on carb cravings and why we get them. The only one I'd want to qualify is number 7, because if you're eating a low carb diet, your body will be burning fat for fuel and won't be missing the extra carbs even if you're active. However, if you're eating a generally healthy but higher carb diet, then yeah, your body will still be running on carbs, and thus, might crave them if you're very active. Also, I thought 4 was an important point, because 3 is getting to be more widely realised (eat more protein), but people are still so fat phobic. And yet, if you were on an entirely fat-free diet, you would die, because your body needs fat. Yes, there are healthier sources than others and you don't want to totally overload on it*, but fat is an important part of your diet, keeps your blood sugar more stable, and keeps you full longer.

* Though, saying that, if you're eating a diet low enough in carbs, your body won't store even the fat from red meats and such, even if you eat a lot of it. But again, if you're eating a more convential diet, then you'll need to be more careful, but still make sure you're eating a fair amount.

Of course, I came across that article in verifying that my stupid carb indulgences were connected to the fact I hadn't eaten all day. Because I always seem to crave (and buy :\) the worst stuff when I haven't eaten, and I realised it's because my blood sugar drops so low, as mentioned in the very first point. So don't go too long without eating, that's what I say! Plus, I'm stressed out, exhausted and in pain, which hits on #8 and just generally makes me more prone to craving comfort foods, but I've definitely noticed a pattern of me splurging on loads of vile crap when I haven't eaten all day. So that's something to bear in mind, especially for me and the Bruceter-bob, who have known blood sugar issues (though I imagine anyone who hasn't eaten all day will experience a drop in blood sugar, and thus, potential cravings).

A few healthy protein and fat laden snack ideas are nuts (which vary in levels of fat, depending on what kind you get), string cheese (or a slice or two of normal cheese, though string cheese has the added benefits of coming in a nice, pre-measured serving, and of being mozarella, which is relatively low in fat as well as carbs), a boiled egg, and deli meat (which is surprisingly low in calories) and a bit of cream cheese wrapped in a lettuce leaf. Fruit tends to have a lot of sugar, so you shouldn't really have more than a piece a day if you're wanting to lose weight, but berries and cantaloupe are relatively low in carbs, and thus a good choice if you like them (I'm not big on cantaloupe, so I tend to stick mostly to strawberries, which you can also have with cream if you're eating low carb, *mmmm*).

Anyhoo, I really shouldn't be on about any of this right now since I'm eating so shite, but I figured good info is good info regardless of the source, so I thought I'd share. I swear, though, once I'm not focusing all my energy on getting this house clean - which will hopefully be mostly done by the end of the week - I'm definitely going to start eating better and otherwise taking care of myself. It's just doing that requires a lot of effort and focus in itself, and right now all mine is going into getting this place done. I'm feeling the ill effects of eating so badly, though, so I really am looking forward to being able to shift my focus from taking care of the house to taking care of myself.

(Though taking care of the house is part of taking care of myself, because besides it having a major effect on my mood and outlook, a clean and organised environment will make it that much easier to do the other things I need to do to look after myself.)

day one p90x workout

Ok so i started earlier than I figured but it works out for me since I am in school for the summer and I get my Fridays off. so starting on today , this saturday works out very well.

as for the workout for the first time. I tried to do diamond pushups ) fell on face or chest, and dive bombs OMG, still i tried. and yeah. there is no way to keep up with that video so pause is your friend. I am physically wore out. sweat everywhere. I took a long hot then cold shower which felt great. and guess what...that tension in my neck? its gone. I am going to love this program. Oh by the way, what is that about getting nauseated and chucking about? I know i was breathing and such but i had to run out to do a blow out and then come back for more. are we sadistic? I think so. hehe

I have been eating ok, but I have began to leat less, (hard friggen thing to do) and eat healthier like brown rice ( really hard to chew even if I cook for 45 min. I have to get used to that. So here is what I had yesterday:

Oh yeah mucis id did, forst sucked, second too loud LOL

p90x a weight goal thingy

I am starting off on a quest to loes weight and gain some lean muscle. I have been unhealthy for over 25 years. The last time I was even remotely healthy was when i was out of the service. I now weigh 285, i am 5 foot 10. however I have a large frame and very large bones.

I am probably going to be very sore in the next few weeks but this program by BeachBody called P90x I am going to go for the Classic, which is a workout to lose weight and build muscle. I just wish i could post the results here in pictures.

Omega Oil Again

I just came across this in an old entry of mine where I listed my intentions (goals), and I was on about taking my omega regularly, because besides all the other things it's so important for, omega-3 improves insulin-related function as well.

I had forgotten about that myself, so I just thought it would be worth the reminder, especially for you, Bruce, being diabetic. I mean, omega oils are so important to so many different bodily functions anyway, but that's just one more reason to make sure you're getting enough, in supplement form if needs be.

Anyhoo, just a little public service reminder from your friendly, neighborhood 'Freak!

Edit: I wonder if that's part of the reason it helps with the OCD?  I mean, I know it helps improve brain function, but if it keeps your blood sugar more steady, you'd probably get less of an adrenaline hit, and that would help you not feel so anxious as well...

Hey, Everybody, It's Ticker Time Again!

What the heck... may as well make another ticker. At least this time I know not to give up when everything seems to grind to a halt temporarily. As long as I don't go back up and *keep* going up while I'm still eating healthy, I can assume nothing is wrong if I hit a stand still or even gain a pound or two here and there, as long as I start going back down eventually.

I'm tempted to put it on my Facebook profile, but a) I don't want everyone to know how fat I am, and b) especially not when I've only lost four pounds. Let me lost a more substantial amount, and I'll be so chuffed and so proud, I'll be shouting it from the rooftops. :}

P.S. I was going to do my usual scale motif, but when I went to finish my ticker, the little sun was there, I guess it accidentally got set on that somehow (even though I thought sure I'd clicked the scale). I thought the symbolism was very uplifting and optimistic, so I decided to pick a bar that went better with it and keep the sunshine.

day too

ok so i took advice,

Breakfast: eggs and milk
snack fruit cup
lunch soup beef veggie
snack: lemon and celery
dinner: soup again.

as for anything else i am getting tha p90x thingy disk dvd and Alex and I are going to give it a shot. honestly, healthy weight and life style start at home and early age. so I have to teach him about healthy living and if i can make him feel better. I am hoping that teaching him will follow him thruogh life. so we shall see.

And speaking of coconut oil...

...I came across this, which makes me want to try it even more!

Fiber, Flax, and Oil

Not sure what made me think of it, but I was reading up about natural ways to disolve gallstones (which I think of now and then ever since doing a flush and seeing how many stones I passed), and one of the things it mentioned was plenty of fiber. And then I was looking up low carb - i.e. non-grain - fiber sources, and I found a mention of flax seed. I'm mentioning it here because it's supposed to be quite satiating, and it's a good low carb diet food. Not to mention it's rich in omega fatty acids, which not only helps you burn fat and is important for overall health in various ways (including heart, brain, energy, immune system, etc etc), but I can attest it can make a huge difference to your mental health as well!

More on flax and fiber, and some info on oil as well...Collapse )

So hard to make heads or tails of nutritional info sometimes - basically, the only thing I'm confident of is that lots of veg - particularly of the non-starchy variety - and a fair amount of protein is healthy, and that moderation is key. Everything else has me pretty well baffled!
